Troubled Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia suffered another jolt in their title defence ambitions after they were beaten 2-1 by Bandari at Mombasa Municipal Stadium on Sunday.
This was K’Ogalo’s second loss in three matches following a 2-0 reversal against Top Fry Nakuru last weekend at Afraha Stadium.
The latest setback will certainly set off the alarm bells at the club that has now gone four matches without winning and are placed sixth on the log with 11 points, four behind leaders Tusker.
The Mombasa encounter was a nervy affair that was settled by Victor Majid’s 75th minute strike. Alloyce Mangi had given the coastal side the lead in the 40th minute only for Dan Sserunkuma to bring Gor Mahia back into the match on the stroke of half time.
Egged on by their partisan travelling fans, Gor went for the jaguar in the second period but as has often been the case since the start of the season, they lacked firepower upfront.
For former Bandari man, Shaban Kenga, it wasn’t a very memorable reunion and he was later pulled off by coach Bobby Williamson to pave way for Patrick Oboya’s entry.
The Scottish coach also introduced George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo for Kevin Omondi but the tactical switch came to naught.
Last minute goal
On the other hand, Bandari coach Twahir Muhiddin brought on Victor Ndinya for Ali Bhai and Justus Anene for Kevin Amwayi.
The dockers had the final say courtesy of Majid’s effort following a one-two with Mangi. The result leaves Gor Mahia in seventh place with 11 points while Bandari are twelfth with 7 points.
At Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium, Ulinzi Stars goalkeeper Francis Ochieng scored a dramatic last minute goal from a free kick to salvage a 1-1 draw with Thika United.
After on-form Michael Olunga had given Thika the lead late in the first half, newly appointed Ulinzi coach Robert Matano appeared to be staring defeat in the face on his first match in charge until Ochieng caught his opposite number Muwonge Hamuza unawares with a freak 50-yard blockbuster for a valuable point.
Ulinzi who along with KCB are still the only teams yet to win a match this season will remain in thirteenth place with 6 points in seven outings with Thika United placed fifth on 12 points from an equal number of matches.
In Awendo, hosts Sony Sugar missed a chance to climb to second spot after they were held to a barren draw with Mathare United.
Sony are fourth on the table with 12 points, behind Tusker (15 points), Chemelil Sugar and Western Stima who are tied on 13points. Mathare United are hovering above the relegatio
